TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS

Suggestions include the following details

1. Know your health status before you make your travel plans or make an appointment with your doctor at least one month before you leave. Find out about medicines you might need to take with you.

2.  Keep your travel plans, including accommodations, to yourself.

3. Try not to travel at night.

4. Avoid "seedier" areas of the city, city streets that include children and families are safe.

5. Keep a photocopy of your passport, carry with yourself all the contact details of your closed ones.

6. Try to drink bottled or treated water if you have that option, in order to prevent bacterial or viral diseases.

7. One of the most encountered issues when travelling internationally is traveller's diarrhoea so eat wisely, consume healthy fruits, nuts and stick to cooked meals. Avoid street foods especially, if you have any digestive problems and try to make your own meals. Make sure you wash your hands well with water or hand sanitiser before eating.

8. Protect yourself from insect bites, to do this add a few drops of citronella oil in your moisturizer or mosquito repellent to prevent malaria, dengue or other diseases.

9. Getting yourself vaccinated especially if you are travelling to the countries where dengue, chikungunya, typhoid, encephalitis, influenza, Ebola and others are common.

10. Carry a first aid kit that contains common tablets and disinfectants, among other essentials is important.

11. Protect your skin by wearing sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15.

12. Don't make yourself an attractive target to others.

13. Have an exercise routine.

14. Travelling is harsh on our body so make sure you get plenty of rest. How much is enough? listen to your body.

15. Research restaurants ahead of arriving if you have a plan to dine out.

16. Remember your supplements and take extra probiotics.

17. Avoid animal bites, if an animal bites, licks or scratches wash immediately with soap and water. Call a doctor if you need medication, a tetanus vaccine booster or rabies preventive treatment.

18. Avoid stress by planning ahead.

19. Travellers with disabilities will need to make sure in advance that their needs can be accommodated while travelling and should consider making arrangements for wheelchairs and guiding dogs. Finding out the medical facility nearby, getting a letter from your doctor detailing your medical requirement or conditions and carry a medical alert bracelet or pendant for specific conditions.

20.  Keep active. Treat yourself in a while, like Anthony Bourdain once said, “Your body isn’t a temple, it’s an amusement park, enjoy the ride.”
